It is freezing, snowing and getting dark. This is the last day of the year – New Year’s Eve. On this cold and dark night, a cute little girl is walking barefoot in the street. She has come out of the house wearing a pair of slippers, but what’s the use?
It was a big pair of slippers – so big that her mother always wore them. As she crossed the road, two carriages came driving so fast that she ran away and lost  her shoes. One driver couldn’t find anything and the other asked a boy to pick them up but he ran away. He said that he could use the slipper as a cradle when he had children in the future.
The little girl had to walk barefoot, her feet were red and blue with cold. She carried many matches In her old apron and a bunch in her hand. No one had bought her matches or given her a coin all day.
Poor little girl! She trembled as she walked on, cold and hungry. Snowflakes fell on her long golden hair, which rolled over her shoulders and looked beautiful, but she didn’t notice. Lights were shining through every window, and there was a roast goose smell in the street, because it was New Year’s Eve, which she could not forget.
She sat down on the corner by a house and hugged her legs. She felt colder. She dared not go home because she hadn’t sold  a match and earned any money. Dad would beat her. Besides, the house was as cold as the street. There was only the roof over their heads, and although the biggest crack had been blocked with grass and rags, the wind could still blow in.

I have submitted a recording read verbatim from the text. There are some errors in the text. Will this be taken into account or is it based on the reading of the text as it is written?

Aren’t you an English teacher ? Fix the errors first then record !

Did they ask anyone to change it?

I feel like your response was a little rude. They asked us to read the text not fix it.

Was there any need for the rudeness? They are asking for voice-over artists, not editors. I hope you don’t talk to your students this way.

That is inaccurate information. In Voice Over Narration, you read verbatim. You do not correct the grammar.

Exactly what I was thinking

I think it’s a google translation from Chinese to English. This is why there are some errors. I read it as it is, as it’s just a trial, but I would definitely try and notify them of the corrections if it was something to be shared with students.

I agree Barney Jones! The story, itself, confused me with the grammatical errors and misplaced sentences. I was going to rewrite it and submit.

LOL ! noticed them as well ! what should we do then? just read it as it is, or correct, re -write and submit ? ideas?

I read it just as it is. If you look closer this is a collection of sentences, not a story per se. As a voice-over artist myself I can understand why they chose these sentences. There are some…traps in here, breathing difficulties, odd words put together, pauses, the ability to give meaning to something by intonation alone, etc.

I agree with Ciprian – I read verbatim although the sentences don’t make sense as a story.

Yes.. I can see the errors, but will read it as it is.
Can anyone tell me what 0.1BR per minute is, and if so, how does 1BR equate to the same pay if you contribute to a 25 or 45 min session.. Surely you would receive more remuneration for a longer class?

In ITG you’ve always been paid the same amount for a 25 minute OUP session as you have a 45 minute session. So depending on your contract that ends up being something like 6 dollars for 10 minutes of spoken word. As an actual voice actor, the going price for 10 minutes of spoken word for e-learning with lifetime copyright is >$400

I agree with all. I have noticed lots of grammatical errors in the story. I am not sure if we are allowed to submit the record after recertifying the errors. So, I’ll be doing it as it is.

Hmmm….I rewrote….actually even switched tense to present to make it more active. Oh well.

There are multiple approaches possible for this. There are dramatic possibilities, or one could do a more neutral recording. It rather depends on the purpose. I’ve done VOs for commercials and narrations, each has a different purpose and approach. They really didn’t give much direction, so we’ll see.

They’ve always been super cheap on their pay though so it’s to be expected. For some reason, they don’t like to pay what’s right for good quality work and choose volume over quality. It is good if you’re looking to expand your resume though!

I am a radio presenter with 20 years experience, I’ve done a million of these things. I used to do voiceovers on Fiverr but that got saturated by people buying cheap mics and doing everything for $5.

But good luck to whoever gets the gig, I’m sure there’ll be a load of work for not much cash!

I have read the story and submitted it verbatim from the text. I hope that this story will be edited to correct its many mistakes. Like others, I really wanted to rewrite it before submitting it.

You did what you were supposed to do. Good job. You were not supposed to edit it. In this role we are voice over artists, not the English teacher. I think you will be able to make a note and send it to administration about the errors, but to record it, just read verbatum.

They are actually planning to pay even less than that. It says only one-tenth of a Base Rate per minute, so if this is only two minutes long, then they’re planning to pay “bupkas”.

Anyone else planning on reading these as slow as possible to maximise earnings? 😛

Karen Wiley

We are supposed to read them slowly since they are for English language learners. We use intonation, pace and articulation so that it is understandable and enjoyable for the student.

After recording it a second time I noticed that the slippers begged the boy to pick it up. I just found it really funny.

Hi Jon. I too am a professional VO artist. I did not go into professional mode with my equipment for this. I used my noise canceling headset with mic, and Audacity. I did not use a sound proof room and my good mic. This pay for this is pittance. They don’t want to pay the average rate for a professional, that is why they are asking teachers whom they assume have not done this for a living. It will help pad our paychecks a bit, and right now we may all need that.
